Birthday 1961 Mouton

A special occasion deserves a special bottle, and what can be more special than the birthday of a great friend? We went into the cellar to pick a bottle and the 1961 Mouton jumped out at us! I have been fortunate enough to taste this wine in the past and I think that now is the perfect time to pop this wine. With 57 years of age in the bottle, this wine is on the precipice of loose all of its fruit.

I had a little trouble getting the cork out of the wine, with the very end of it breaking off in the neck of the bottle. Fortunately, I was able to get it all out without crumbling any of it into the wine. I have to say that this wine was as magnificent as I can remember if not a little better. The wine was holding on to the edge of its fruit, but the balance between acidity and tannin was remarkable.

Tasting Notes: The nose was like an old leather trunk containing all of your favorite things. Like a kid, I jumped into the wine headfirst finding dried blueberries, classic graphite, cassis, and a beautiful earthiness that made me want to keep my nose in the glass for hours. The palate was softer than silk but with a surprising weight that filled the senses with stunning floral notes and layers of elegant fruit that I thought would be forgotten on a wine of this age.
