2012 Domaine Digioia Royer Chambolle Musigny

I am sure you know that I am a huge Burgundy fan, and this bottle has definitely turned my head. In the land of Burgundy where everything is small production and extremely hard to find it is hard to call anything “cult”, but Michel Digioia of Digioia Royer has somehow managed to cultivate the title for his small production wines. With only 500 cases made of his 2012 Chambolle Musigny, less than 200 were imported into the United States and I have managed to grab 5 of the cases that came into Texas.

Michel Digioia is a third-generation winemaker, taking over the vineyard for his wife’s parents in 1999. He then started to do something that no one else in Chambolle was doing – making a wine with power. He saw the market changing and decided to try and extract more intense fruit and length from his wines. The result has been wonderful and for the price point, a wine that I think is magnificent!

The average vine age for his Chambolle Musigny is 50 years old helping to give his wines that wonderful complexity you receive from older vines. There are no tractors on his 4 ha of land as all of the grapes are hand harvested, then 100% destemmed. A cold fermentation follows allowing for more extraction and more power to these gentle giants. A kiss of 20% new oak to round out the wine allows the beautiful natural acidity to shine through giving you a crisp, clean finish.

I would highly recommend decanting this wine for at least 30 min to an hour to allow it to breathe, but once the wine has opened it is gorgeous! High-toned fruit shows beautifully on the bouquet revealing flashes of Bing cherry, ripe plum, and blackberries. On the palate, you received layers of baked fruit with cooking spice, violets, and mocha. Incredibly deep complexity on the 30+ second finish with a lingering acidity that cleans your palate for the next taste.
