About the Wine

Clos Figueras was acquired by Charlotte and Christopher Cannan in 1997. The estate covers 22 hectares in the heart of Priorat. The 2500 old Grenache and Carignan vines, planted in the 1930's, contribute to the prestigious Clos figueres wine.

The location of the estate is just north of the renown village of Gratallops on steep terraces of pure shist soil sloping down to the Montsant river at an altitude of between 300 and 500 meters. The poor rocky soil, orientation of the vineyard and the extremely low yield define the personality and finesse of the wines.

Grapes from the 80+ year old vines are hand harvested and collected in 20kg crates. On entering the bodega the best grapes are sorted manually on the selection table. "Microvinification" is done in 500 liter oak casks which are turned on their side to form small open-topped vats. The wine undergoes regular hand pigeage and extended maceration on the skins. It is then aged for 14 months in a selection of new and 1 year old oak casks.

Tasting Notes:

Clos Figueres has a denser rich ruby color with wonderful scents of ripe blackberries and blueberries intermingled with the rich mineral flavors of a great Priorat. On the palate Clos Figueres is approachable with pure intense flavors and a lush smooth texture. Loaded with fresh red and black fruit with minerals and spices, the finish is long and smooth. A delight for drinking over the next 12 to 15 years.
